INVITED SPEAKER
  • WLG Discussion Lab: Artists As Witness to Our Times The first WLG Discussion Lab held in 2017 at Wei-Ling Gallery, invited in three speakers of different backgrounds, to a live dialogue entitled When Art Confronts Ethical Concerns . This debate surrounded the Guggenheim Museum s Theater of The World (2017) exhibit controversy, which touched the subject of animal rights and the limits to artistic expression. The third edition of the WLG Discussion Lab pushes forward its conversation beyond the gallery s walls and into the National Visual Arts Gallery of Malaysia, in conjunction with the exhibition Teh Tarik with The Flag. The theme 'Artists As Witness to Our Times' is timely as it occurs during a time of change and hope in Malaysia.Revealing views and sentiments from three of the country s voices , Choy Chun Wei, Hayati Mokhtar and Ivan Lam, the dialogue attempts to shed light on the complex understanding of an artist s role in observing and capturing the essence of their society and the world around them. Departing from the pre-existing concept by Robert Rauschenberg who leaned on the theory that The artist s job is to be a witness to his (or her) time in history , the round table serves to accommodate each artist s stance be it absolute or multilayered in relation to the statement. What justifies an artist's significance in society? What are the proximities between art and social issues? Do artists contribute in writing history through their work? If Choy Chun Wei chose to accentuate through painting, the joy of Malaysians in reaction of the new government s glory, Hayati Mokhtar explored the notion of home through video work, depicting the life of an Uncle in Kampung Kepayang. Meanwhile, Ivan Lam critiques bureau creational procedures that involve race identification, which contrasts with the ideology of the Jalur Gemilang as symbol of unity. To witness is to experience, hence to capture anecdotes of our time. Through different strategies, codes and moods, these artists seek to encapsulate the present - to enshrine it for the future. To what extent can art be considered a mirror of our times? How important are the roles of artists in capturing the intangible mood of their times through their work? , WLG Discussion Lab: Artists as witness to our times, 29/08/2018 to 29/08/2018, National Art Gallery, Malaysia (National)
