Ms. Siow Yuen Ching

Passionate, dedicated and enthusiastic lecturer with more than seven years’ experience in teaching and researching in areas, such as journalism, newspaper and magazine production, feature writing and media writing.

A former news journalist and features editor for more than seven years in the newspaper and magazine industries in Malaysia and Singapore. Demonstrated deep respect for deadlines. An experienced communicator with trained news sense. Thrives on a team and possesses proven enthusiasm for challenges like researching, investigating and developing stories.

One of the three members of The Star reporting team that won the inaugural Penang state Media Awards for a series of investigative reports on water supply problems in Penang in 2004. Contributed articles for the publication of the Famous Street Food of Penang: A Guide and Cook Book by Star Publications (M) Bhd.

Reported on major events in Malaysia like the fatal dengue outbreak, the 2004 General Elections and by-elections, the 2004 Asian tsunami and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) crisis. Among foreign assignments were revival of tourism industry in Bali, Indonesia after the 2002 bombing, Singapore Airline's inaugural flight between Singapore and Amritsar, India, tourism in Taiwan after the 1999 earthquake and charity tour of Malaysia's first international children's choir, Operafest Children's Choir, in Bangalore, India.

A member of the Golden Key International Honour Society (Monash Australia Chapter), in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement and excellence – averaging at High Distinction for Master of Communications and Media Studies from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Research interests: news writing and print journalism; the Internet and new media; participatory technology and the public sphere; and journalistic ethics and practice.
